The Republican Party has included language in its platform that calls for a
full audit of the Federal Reserve and a commission to study a return to the
gold standard, thanks to the mounting grassroots efforts inspired by 2012
Republican Presidential candidate and Texas Congressman Ron Paul.
A Paul-penned House resolution – H.R. 459: The Federal Reserve Transparency
Act – received overwhelming bipartisan support in the House on July 25,
2012, exceeding the two-thirds majority needed to pass with a vote of
327-98.
The ultimate goal of the Republicans is to establish some transparency
surrounding the Fed's monetary policy decisions and hold the central bank,
which largely operates in complete secrecy, accountable for the policies it
implements. "Numerous studies show that nations with less political, more
autonomous, central banks have superior inflation performance" (Cato
Institute).
Many critics of the bill contend that Congressional "meddling" into the
Fed's affairs will only work to politicize delicate monetary
decision-making. Citing stubborn Republican opposition to an increase in
the debt ceiling last year as an example, critics such as Senator Harry
Reid (D-NV) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), argued that the bill is
inconducive to the kind of quick and agile policy enactment necessary to
respond to emergency economic crises that emerge. While these critics'
concerns seem valid on the surface, the Fed's monetary policy is already
highly politicized. For instance, in 1976, the role of the vice chairman of
the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System changed despite
spirited protests from a number of Senators at the time. Prior to the
change, the vice chairman was appointed from within the Federal Reserve
System based on seniority. After 1976, the vice chairman was appointed by
the administration seated in the Executive office – the President of the
United States. How does this politicize the Fed's monetary policies? The
vice chairman now becomes instrumental in promoting
administration-supported banking legislation (source: Cato Institute).
Despite the Federal Reserve Transparency Act's strong bipartisan support in
the House, Sen. Harry Reid feels so strongly opposed to the legislation
that he has vowed to stop it's companion bill – S. 202: The Federal Reserve
Transparency Act – in the Senate, refusing to allow it to even reach the
floor for a vote. Funny, Senator Reid, your passionate position on the
Federal Reserve seems to have made a 180-degree turn since we last heard
you speak on the issue…

So both Republicans and Democrats agree…. Great! Let's get it passed then

I guess he has had a change of heart….
Back in the 1990s, an elected official offered a fiery speech on why we
need to peel back the layers of Federal Reserve secrecy.
This scene was repeated again in 2009 and 2010.
