In America you forgot one part of the Enlightenment Age idology. It wasn't just about "freedom". It was also about "equality". You admit people political and legal equalities (the "natural rights" of a man), but not economical equality.
About 1/3 or in some countries 1/2 of the people in Europe, Canada and Japan are socialdemocrats who think there should also be more equality economically. They are against poverty and against high earnings. I'm one of them, Alex obviously isn't.

We can't balance trade with wages, not unless we want to have another 750 million babies, and have all adults work for $0.58/hour, like they do in China. We simply can't produce enough goods to compete. So, we must protect domestic markets the good old-fashioned way. Tariffs are a traditional conservative means for protecting our markets. We should implement them without delay. It is almost too late.
The funny thing is, some capital is left. This gets sucked up, for the most part, by the top 5% of wage earners. They are like giant sponges. If a few little puddles of capital are left, the rest of society is left to fight over it.
Unless we stop the trade deficit and then reinvigorate the economy with infusions of capital, whether through tax cuts or govt spending, we are doomed. Stop working against your interests. Demand tariffs on imports to stop the trade deficit.
The problem is the trade deficit. Look at it like this. The economy is a bathtub filled with water (capital). There is a crack in the side of the tub. Unless you plug the tub, no matter how many tax cuts or how much govt spending you do, if you don't plug the hole, what happens to the water? It runs out. And for over 30 years, it's been leaking capital of $500 to $800 billion/year. You cannot sustain an economy that way. Third world, here we come!
